  • Public Relations, Digital Marketing, & Strategic Planning are the top hard skills to showcase in your resume with the frequency of these skills showing up in job postings 15% of the time for Public Relations, 12% for digital marketing, and 12% for strategic planning.
  • Communications, Management, & Sales are the top soft skills to showcase in your resume with the frequency of these skills showing up 64% of the time for communications, 39% for management, and 36% for sales
  • 21% of postings require 0-1 years of experience. 
  • Oracle, Abbvie, & MarketCrossing are the top companies posting. 

According to EMSI, the number of active job postings for Advertising & PR have declined by nearly 31% from June 2020. The decline in roles has been consistent for the last week.  Public Relations, Digital Marketing, & Strategic Planning are the top hard skills to showcase in your resume with the frequency of these skills showing up in job postings 15% of the time for Public Relations, 12% for digital marketing, and 12% for strategic planning. Communications, Management, & Sales are the top soft skills to showcase in your resume with the frequency of these skills showing up 64% of the time for communications, 39% for management, and 36% for sales. 21% of postings require 0-1 years of experience.   • Journalism, Copywriting, & Adobe Photoshop are the top hard skills to showcase in your resume with the frequency of these skills showing up in job postings 30% of  the time for Journalism, 28% for copywriting, and 14% for Adobe Photoshop.

While postings have declined,  It is encouraging to note that 33% of openings in Journalism, Entertainment, & Production only require 0-1 years of experience. Similarly, 18% of openings are listed as entry-level positions, with no experience listed.     • Software & Web Development opportunities have dipped 22% compared to June 2019. We’ve seen a consistent decline in unique postings over the last week compared to last year. 
    • Java, Software Engineering, & SQL are the top hard skills shown in postings with these skills appearing 38% of the time in postings for Java & Software Engineering and 33% for SQL
    • Communications, Problem Solving, and Leadership are the top soft skills shown in postings with communication skills showing up 38% of the time, Problem Solving showing up 22% of the time, and leadership showing up 19% of the time in postings.
    • Software Engineers, Java Developers, Front-End Developers are the top positions posted.

  • Communications, Presentations, and Detail Oriented are the top soft skills shown in postings with communication skills showing up 56% of the time, presentations showing up 41% of the time, and detail orientation showing up 31% of the time in postings.

Main Takeaways

  • Database Administration & Network Support opportunities have dipped 11.4% compared to May 2019, however, the trends are changing daily and show sporadic decreases and increases. For example, on May 31, 2020  trends show a 0.3% decrease in postings compared to May 31, 2019, however, on June 1, 2020 trends show a 5% increase in postings compared to June 1, 2019. 
  • Opportunities for Systems Administrators, Network Engineers, Database Administrators have the most opportunities with 16,741 total open positions in the Chicagoland area.  
  • Employers, such as Dell Technologies, Fast Enterprises LLC, and Cisco are examples of top employers who reached out to DePaul students on Handshake within the last month. According to EMSI, across the domain of Database Administration & Network Support, the number of active job postings dipped slightly from May 2019 to May 2020, however the trends are changing daily and show sporadic decreases and increases. Systems Administrator, Network Engineer, and Database Administrator roles lead the pack in the number of opportunities available. In sheer volume, the number of opportunities for System Administrators was 6,108 total positions in the Chicagoland area, followed by Network Engineers with 6,012 and Database Administrators with 4,621. It is also encouraging to note that 17% of openings in Database Administration & Network Support require 0-1 years of experience, which is great news for 2020 grads.

Who’s Hiring: Recruiting Trends in Media, Communication, Arts & Entertainment

COVID-19 has hit many industries with layoffs, furloughs, and a lot of uncertainty. Nearly all areas of the MCAE community decreased hiring due to COVID. Many of these industries rely heavily on live events and freelance professionals. This document gives an overview of industry trends & updates on what’s happening in the media, arts, communication, and entertainment industries in the age of COVID. 

Film & Entertainment


  • Major entertainment festival cancellations and postponements 

Animation


  • Some studios have transitioned to remote work and are conducting business as usual (i.e. Disney Television) 
  • Industry has not shut down like most others, but things are moving as a slower rate
  • Nickelodeon Animation Studio & Warner Brothers working remotely 
  • Fox-owned Bento Box Entertainment (creator of Bob’s Burgers) is hiring 500 artists and production staff across Los Angeles, Atlanta and London. It has openings for about 20 freelance production personnel. 
  • Animated music videos anticipated (Atlantic Records)
  • Magic Leap startup, laid off 1,000 employees—around half its workforce.

    • After Powell’s Books in Portland, OR, reportedly laid off about 85 percent of its staff on March 15 when it closed five stores, the bookseller re-hired 100 of those employees due to online sales demand.

  • Comics industry has been hit hard
  • Online proofreading and editing services still operating 
  • News media job market in crisis 
    • Smaller city-wide or state-wide news outlets particularly vulnerable
    • Local newspapers are currently losing 30-60% of advertising due to the coronavirus.
    • Newsrooms furlough employees rather than lay them off
    • However, there is a surge in readers
  • Freelancers are limited not only by newsroom budgets but also by their lack of company-sponsored health insurance.

Accounting, Audit & Compliance


Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are in demand right now as accountants are needed to triage the impact of COVID-19 on businesses.  It is encouraging to note that accounting firms are hiring during the pandemic. Public accounting firms are transitioning well to remote work, including for internships and new hires, though some firms are adjusting the length of their internship programs. EY, Deloitte, KPMG, and RSM are among the top companies posting between March 2019-2020. 

Companies hiring now in Chicago:

    • Baker Tilly: Needs in Consulting, Audit, Tax, Assurance, and more. 
    • Porte Brown: Midsize Accounting firm hiring now. 
    • Exelon: Corporate accounting opportunity at a large scale Energy Provider company. 

 

Banking & Financial Services


Going remote in the banking industry has increased collaboration between Fintech startups and big banks. The industry’s trend toward digital banking prior to COVID-19 has accelerated, and companies are increasingly focusing more on analytics in hiring. Higher levels of remote access have also raised new cybersecurity concerns, increasing the banking industry’s need for more expertise in this area. J.P. Morgan, Wells Fargo, and Northern Trust are among the top companies posting between March 2019-2020. 

Companies hiring now in Chicago:

    • E*Trade: Fintech company, collaboration with Morgan Stanley. Roles in Product Development, Mobile Quality Assurance, Trading, Web Development, and more. 
    • Morningstar: Business needs in Product, Analyst Roles, Customer Success, and more.
    • Bank of America: Hiring across Relationship Management, Operations, and Analyst functional areas. 

 

Hospitality & Retail


While travel and tourism are hurting immensely, along with the restaurant industry, there have been reverse growth trends for food service and grocery services, with many large companies hiring in those areas. Revenue management and analytics are two areas of employment that will be in demand in the recovery of the hospitality industry. Gamestop Inc., Walgreens, Boots, and Menard Inc. are among the top companies hiring between March 2019-2020. 

Companies hiring now in Chicago:

    • PepsiCo: Financial Analyst, Customer Management, and Shopper Marketing roles are open in the Chicago office.
    • Kroger: People Services Management, E-Commerce, and Retail Clerks are among the needs of this large grocery store chain.
    • KraftHeinz: Analyst roles across the board are in particular need in the Chicago office.

 

Human Resources


With a changing landscape to how we work, there has been increased investment in remote workers. A few notable trends include companies creating Employee Resource groups for families doing remote work, and there has been growth in curriculum development for hiring, onboarding, and training remote employees. Technology-wise, an emphasis on internal communication has led to the rise of tools like Slack, and there has also been growth in companies’ usage of AI in the hiring process.

    • GoHealth: This healthcare company is hiring for multiple Human Resources positions.
    • KellyMitchell: This women-owned technical recruiting firm is hiring across multiple HR areas. 
    • RHM Staffing Solutions: Staffing firm focusing on commercial and engineering staffing. 

 

Logistics & Operations


The logistics industry is facing a large demand across consumer goods, including grocery retail and healthcare supplies in particular. This spike in demand has been met with challenges that include protecting the public health of employees on the front lines in procurement and delivery. To protect employees and speed transport, the logistics industry is looking to digitize through increased AI, autonomous drones, and robotics. AbbVie, Anthem Inc., and Oracle are among the top companies posting between March 2019-2020.

    • C.H. Robinson: Large logistics company in Chicago, partner with DePaul’s Center for Sales Leadership, hiring for a variety of roles, including Logistics Representatives, Account Managers, and Project Managers. 
    • Flexport: Another logistics company to watch in technology innovation, hiring across Sales and Analyst roles. 
    • Nolan Transportation Group: Hiring across Account Management and Carrier Sales divisions.

 

Management & Organizational Leadership


All major consulting firms are currently hiring, although there has been a noticeable shift from an education-based hiring strategy to experience-based hiring. Most companies are now looking for experience, education, and leadership in that order, and we recommend that candidates highlight their analytical abilities throughout the application process.

While there has been a negative impact on growth due to the pandemic, there are bright spots across research and development in Market Research and e-commerce in marketing. Consumer demand for personalized content has also reached an all-time high and is continuing to grow powered by AI. Oracle Corporation, AbbVie, and Medline Industries are among the top companies posting between March 2019-2020.

    • Epsilon: This data-driven global marketing firm is looking to grow its Chicago office. 
    • Peapod Digital Labs: Growing across e-commerce, B2B Optimization, and media management. 
    • IRi: Research and development and client insights are among the open opportunities at IRi.

Education – Schools shut down completely

  • CPS and other schools have shifted to remote teaching and learning. Student teaching will continue in a remote capacity.
  • No changes have been made for fall 2020 recruiting.

Nonprofits – Loss of funding

  • The cancelation of fundraising galas and partner development conferences further strains the finances, capacity, and resources for the majority of nonprofits. The long-term impact to nonprofits’ bottom-line will affect the capacity of many nonprofits to serve their constituents in the months, and possibly years, to come.   • Foundations and donors are supporting frontline nonprofits that are tending those who need medical care as a result of COVID. (National Council of Nonprofits)

Government – Federal, State and Local departments are overwhelmed

  • All levels of government are on a rapid learning curve as they try to manage remote workers and new online skills. This is an opportunity for jobseekers to highlight their skills with technology as an asset to employers. 
  • As a result of economic challenges (relief, aid, etc.), budgets will likely be more strained in 2020 and 2021. Serious reprioritization of technology investments will be required to overcome these challenges.
